DHA CITY KARACHI (DCK)
DHA City Karachi (DCK) has been envisioned as ‘The First Sustainable City of Pakistan’, which will serve as a model for the future independent cities in the country and abroad. The aim has been to plan and build a city, which provides its citizens a safe, comfortable, efficient and beautiful lifestyle.
Successfully completed within a period of 12 months, through an unprecedented master planning exercise involving 100+ national & international professional experts, using latest international standards & GIS technology, this project will bring both DCK & Pakistan on the international map of sustainable cities development.
DHA City Karachi (DCK) is located on the Karachi-Hyderabad Superhighway at the eastern border of Karachi, bordering Thatta District in the South and Jamshoro District in the East.
The project is strategically situated at a distance of 56 km from the city core area of Karachi, 35 km from the Karachi Airport, 26 km from the Toll Plaza and about 120 km from Hyderabad City.
The upcoming city is planned on an area spanning 11,640 acres, comprising residential, commercial and mixed-use elements.
Planning, Design and Implementation of a world-class 24/7 transportation & utilities infrastructure. Emphasis on water & energy needs of the city.
The safest city suburb in Pakistan with safety features incorporated through planning & information technology interventions.
Integrated facilities for work, schooling, shopping, recreation & community activities in close proximity.
Using international vision + local experience, to provide: a beautiful living environment with highest quality of life in Pakistan.
The most energy efficient and sustainable suburb of Pakistan with efficient Pedestrian, Cycling, Metro & Roadway Systems and Renewable Energy Systems.
DCK seeks to provide high quality living within the neighbourhoods, with strong economy and business development that enhances the bond between the residents and the city.
DCK seeks to encourage economically driven development by providing a variety of facilities such as business infrastructure and work opportunities for its residents. This will create opportunity for the residents to reduce daily trips to Karachi and work in proximity to their dwellings. Apart from the city-wide functionality, an international business approach is also planned in DCK Downtown District. The sophisticated security structure of the city along with the overall life quality ensures that business activities can be hosted with maximum safety.
Community facilities at DCK form an essential part of the urban environment. These facilities include schools, hospital and healthcare services, shopping malls & hypermarkets, public community centers, libraries, sports & recreational facilities, social welfare, postal, religious houses, police stations, childcare centers, fire & rescue stations, public buildings and transportation network. To attract citizens from Karachi & Hyderabad, recreational facilities like Outlet Mall, Golf Course, Sports Center, Theme Parks and cultural activities such as leisure shopping, restaurants, theaters, cinemas and galleries are provided in designated mixed use areas.
One of the main goals of DCK is to adopt a holistic and sustainable design approach. The city therefore would operate with less energy, part of which will be generated on site from low-carbon and renewable energy sources (solar, wind, biomass). The main concepts for DCK’s sustainable master planning are:
Energy demand reduction
Use of renewable energy sources
Provision for strategic locations for heat sinks (lakes-forests-green areas)
Provision for shading from trees/buildings
Provision for efficient planning to benefit from prevailing winds
The entire master planning scheme consists of residential sectors planned as mini cities within DCK, with all the residential and communal facilities provided within a distance of 5-20 minute walk. The planning concept of these residential sectors has been adopted from the Ekistics concept model of urban planning.
Routes have been designed in such a way so as to keep the traffic flow to a minimum yet still maintain space for pedestrians and cycling.
Up to ten to twelve communities have been planned in a way to ensure maximum tranquility as no large commercial centers, multifamily homes have been allowed with a view to guarantee complete peace and serenity in the area.
A highly structured transportation network has been mapped out to facilitate the residents.
Two main roads will provide rapid access to the entire site, minimizing the distance of any point from the Superhighway and allowing the development of vital activities beyond the frontage of DHA City Karachi.
A north-south roadway connects the Superhighway with the farthest southern area and an east-west roadway connects the newly planned developments with DCK.
Malir River Expressway project has been approved by the Sindh Govt and CDGK, and will be executed through public-private partnership. This will amazingly reduce the traveling time from the metropolis to DCK to 30 minutes thus shrinking the distances.
A rail loop (Karachi Circular Railway) is also planned for providing a safe and fast means of communication between DCK and Karachi.

A series of pedestrian bridges will connect the communities and the center above the main roadways.
As per the DCK Transportation Plan there will be a myriad of road networks, major intersections, collector roads, service roads, roundabouts, one way regimes and the concept of using maximum public transport.
Public transportation consists of two street car trams, articulated modern buses, pedestrian areas and parking lots. Residents shall be encouraged to use public transport instead of private vehicles developing a culture of walking/cycling for short distances in DCK.
The educational facilities within DHA City Karachi constitutes 4 levels of education:
Universities (DCK International University and a Medical College), Colleges, Primary and Secondary Schools and Kindergartens, planned in each residential sector.
DCK Health City including a Medical College and a teaching hospital will ensure provision of state-of-the-art health care facilities to the residents. Additionally, there will be primary care clinics in each residential sector along with a secondary health care complex in the Southern Zone.
Security concerns have been meticulously taken care of by keeping a close eye on roads through electronic surveillance.
Provision of Walled City, Security Towers, Check Posts and Central Entrance Gate are some other measures in this regard.
Thank you for your sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a beneficial book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your info. I am extremely glad to determine such information which I was searching for a long time. This made us very glad!
